Investigating the Male Partner

Introduction
Producing a baby is always a team effort.  There should never be blame placed on either partner in this effort.  We find as a rough rule of thumb, one third of our cases show a problem for the female partner, one third for the male and the remainder a bit for each
If your female partner is under the age of 35 and you have been trying to conceive for one year, or is she is over 35 and you have been trying to conceive for six months, you and your partner should see a physician for a fertility “workup.”
Before starting a full “Workup” we will request one or two tests of his semen production.

Instructions for Private Patients

For initial evaluation, two semen samples should be examined. The interval between the two samples should not be less than seven days or more than three months. For accurate results semen samples should be in the laboratory within forty minutes of production.
Fertility semen analysis can only be carried out Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday by appointment. We have clinics in Hatfield, Hertford, Hitchin and St Albans. Each is open for half a day per week. When you have a request form from your doctor, telephone Women's Health UK on 0845 6861540 for an appointment.

  1. You must abstain from all ejaculation for at least three days before producing the specimen.
  2. The specimen must be produced by means of masturbation only directly into the sterile universal container provided by your doctor or clinic nurse.
  3. A rubber sheath (condom) must NOT be used.
  4. Please ensure that your name (male partner), date and time the specimen is produced are all entered on the container. Also, please ensure that your partner's name (female partner) is clearly recorded on the request form.
  5. To avoid contamination, remove the cap from the container only when you are ready to collect the semen and replace it again immediately after collection.

REMEMBER
Deliver the specimen with as little delay as possible to the appropriate clinic on the appointed day and time. The specimen should be kept at body temperature (e.g. in a pocket) during transport.
Full payment for the test is required before it is performed.
The result will NOT be given to any one other that the man who produced the sample and his doctor who requested the test without his written permission.

N.B. The NHS has decided to use the "NHS Number" as a unique identity for all patients. You should find it on your medical card or from your GP. This might be helpful if your partner has NHS treatment.

Our Semen Analysis Clinics

Women’s Health UK Ltd is dedicated to healthcare of the highest order.  We aim to improve upon current practice wherever possible.  In the past, in our area and even now in most, men have had to travel to the hospital and produce a semen sample in most inhospitable surroundings (often a hospital toilet).  We find this unpleasant and degrading for our clients and so we have set up clinics throughout Hertfordshire.  This means that samples can be produced at home and transported to a clinic within 40 minutes.  As samples must be examined within an hour of production, we arrange that they are delivered throughout the clinic time so that our Medical Technologists can examine them within the appropriate time.
